6. Summary of recent research activity

First scientific experience was obtained at the Entomological center "Argus" (Vladivostok). Extensive practice on breeding butterflies (Papilionidae) and moths (Sphingidae and Saturniidae) was provided there. I participated in making and holding the exhibitions of living insect, organized in cooperation with Child and Youth Creative Center in Vladivostok in 1992 and 1993.

The main objective of scientific activity since 1994 until 1997 was the investigation of experimental interspecific hybridization in swallowtail butterflies. These investigations were based on the thorough comparative study of the external morphology of adults and larvae.

Recent scientific projects are "Study of population genetic structure of endangered musk swallowtail Atrophaneura alcinous confusus" and "Natural hybridization and evolution in Parnassius". Both morphology and DNA polymorphism were evaluated within the projects.

Ph.D. thesis "Variability and hybridization in swallowtail butterflies (Lepidoptera, Papilionidae) in the Russian Far East".

In 1999-2001, as Russian collaborator, participated in the project of ARS USDA Honey bee breeding, genetics and physiology research laboratory on evaluating resistance of Far-Eastern honey bees Apis mellifera against Varroa destructor (jacobsoni).

Current research project is "Molecular phylogeny, biogeography and divergence time estimates for swallowtail butterflies of the genus Papilio sensu lato (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae)".

7. Technical skills

Conventional methods for morphological studies in insects.

Main techniques to work with DNA (extraction, purification and identification of DNA, PCR, RAPD, RFLP, DNA sequencing).

8. Areas of scientific interests

Population genetics of endangered or threatened butterfly species; biology, ecology, natural hybridization in swallowtail butterflies (Lepidoptera, Papilionidae); insects molecular systematics and phylogeny.
